Spiritual Journey

The Journey's End

"Whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas," a popular ad states. The ad plays on a common human desire to do bad things without any consequences. We all would have liked to be in a world like this at one point or another, however, the ad is not reality. Consequences of actions matter in the real world. If a Las Vegas casino was robbed and the criminals were found in New York, they wouldn't have much of a case using the ad's line. Our time on earth is limited, and the paths we choose will make a difference in eternity, choices have consequences.

Why even bring up the topic of death? Remembering our time on earth is limited brings with it a fresh perspective. Our culture naturally tends to ignore human mortality, and this results in a skewed view of eternity. Almost all religions incorporate some sort of after-life concept. For Christianity, Jesus' death and consequential resurrection lays the groundwork for life after death. The Apostle Paul proposed since Jesus was raised from the dead, Christians will be raised.¹ Thus, Christ is the example by which Christians will follow.

I haven't seen a poll, but certainly most people would agree there is more to life than the new gaming console or the latest fashion in shoes. Even the best attempts at filling a need or helping others is good, but not the ultimate purpose of humanity. A healthy eternal perspective recognizes God's desires must be our own and because of this, how will we response. The revisited perspective of eternity asks what is actually different because of this knowledge. Financially, is there a difference? Is there a difference in schedule? What about habits? There must be quantitative differences in life as a result of an eternal perspective.

The most appropriate response is to establish a relationship with God who desires to connect with us. Meeting God through the terms which have already been set forth requires only faith. This faith rests in believing Jesus Christ has become the bridge of connection establishing what we could not ourselves.

The Christian can also point to giving of time, talent, and the tithe (first 10% of income) as an example of the proper eternal perspective. One of the main reasons for giving in all three areas is to encourage a healthy eternal view and also to recognize God is in total control. Further, giving suspends much of the power these areas may have over the giver. Honestly, it may be hard to distinguish motivations of some actions, however, the only judge of motivations who matters is God.

Consequences of choices made through the journey of life eternally affect us. If we recognize and respond to God's priorities, and accept the terms through which we can enjoy a divine relationship, life after death will be as the Apostle Paul describes, a Blessed Hope.² ³
